Principal’s Message

It has been an eventful week! We have had some very hot days!

We’ve been doing everything we can to keep cool and keep to our usual routines. Well done if you have managed to get your children to school this week – It is much better for them to be here with their friends learning and having fun rather than at home.

It has also been a great learning opportunity for the pupils to know what to do when the weather is warm. We have discussed in class and assemblies the importance of sun protection, staying hydrated and ways of staying cool in the extreme heat. These are really important lessons that will help our pupils stay safe and healthy in the future.

As you know, we’ve made some changes to allow for the hot weather. From Monday, things should be back to normal, so everyone back in full uniform please!

In other news, the school building was hit by lightning during Monday night’s storm. It meant our internet and phone system were out for a while. Apologies if this meant you couldn’t get through to us. Remember – you can always contact us via our website or you can email in on info@oldfordacademy.org

TRANSITION DAY FRIDAY 3rd JULY

Next Friday is transition day. Most of our Y6 pupils will be at their new secondary schools and all other pupils will have the opportunity to spend the morning in their new classes. More information will follow next week.

Cricket - We Love It!

What a day to be proud! 🌟 Our Year 4 cricketers took on 20 schools in the Tower Hamlets Cricket Competition and made it all the way to the FINAL, finishing in 2nd place!

These incredible young athletes showed the whole borough what confidence and resilience truly look like. They didn’t just compete, they inspired. To every single pupil: Well done, we are SO proud of you! 🏆👏

Water Safety in Hot Weather

Please read this message from Tower Hamlets public health:

With the warmer weather, we are seeing an increase in children and young people entering local docks, canals and basins across Tower Hamlets after school. This can be extremely dangerous. Even on hot days, water temperatures remain very low and can cause cold water shock, leading to involuntary gasping, breathing difficulties and loss of control in the water. There are also hidden hazards such as strong currents, sudden drops, submerged objects and slippery edges, making it difficult to get out safely.

We are asking all parents and carers to speak to their children about these risks and to ensure they do not enter open water and instead use supervised swimming facilities only.

You can find more information about staying safe around water from the Royal Life Saving Society.

Attendance

We all know how important regular attendance is. If children aren’t in school, they will miss out on important learning.

I know sometimes children are genuinely to ill to come to school, but if they only have a minor cold or cough it is find to send them in. There’s some good advice here from the NHS if you’re ever not sure.

From this week, we will be sending out weekly messages via MCAS with your child’s attendance percentage for the year to date. 90% may sound like high attendance, but over the course of a whole school year, it’s equal to FOUR WEEKS of missed school!

Online safety

We are still getting reports of pupils on social media apps such as Snapchat.

As you know, an important part of our curriculum is teaching pupils about esafety. We know that a lot of our pupils spend a lot of their time online, either through online gaming or on social media apps. This can sometimes lead to contact with inappropriate people
and/or exposure to inappropriate language. We strongly recommend that you monitor your children’s usage of the internet and that you are aware of what they are doing online.

Most social media apps have an age limit of 13+. If you are allowing your children to access these apps you are putting them at risk!

Start and end of the day

Please remember that there are no staff on duty in the playgrounds before and after school so parents/carers should supervise their own children. Children should not be playing with balls or on the climbing frames.

To keep children safe please do not park on the double yellow or zig-zag lines when you are collecting or dropping off. Tower Hamlets parking enforcement officers are conducting regular patrols in the area.

When collecting your child at the end of the day please wait until all pupils are in their lines before speaking to the teacher and collecting your child. We need to make sure that all of our pupils go home with the right adult!

Unauthorised Absences in Term Time

We follow government guidance on term time holidays and we do not authorise pupil holidays during term time. We encourage parents/carers to take their holidays during one of the scheduled holiday breaks.

You can be fined or face legal action for taking your child on holiday during term time.
