French is taught in KS2 for one hour each week.  It is taught as a block of work after SATS in Year 6.  We use the Jolie Ronde scheme of work to inform planning and this helps us to plan a clear progression of topics and skills throughout the school.  We also have an intercultural understanding focus once per half term, where pupils study a key event in France and compare to events in this country (e.g. how Christmas is celebrated in France.)  We celebrate language learning through the European Day of Languages.

We measure the impact of French teaching through observations, pupil outcomes and drops in.  Pupils keep their work in French folders which progress with them throughout the school. Teachers record when pupils have met the objectives set in the French curriculum and pupils self-assess using their European Language Portfolio.
